The Tubby Blues Club was originally created to raise money for the Renal Unit of the Gloucester Royal Hospital, by Michael 'Tubby' O' Connell. He was a patient there, and as an act of gratitude after his discharge in 2003, he decided to set up the Tubby Blues Club with the aim of raising money for new equipment for the Renal Unit.
Subsequently, following his stays in the Cheltenham General Hospital, the remit expanded to promote live music events in Cheltenham, and donate any profits to hospital charities. They have donated several thousands of pounds to these causes since their inception, recently raising £1,000 for The Acorns Children's Hospice Trust.
Sadly, Tubby died on 23rd February 2007, but his memory lives on in his club, which has been run by local musician Otis Mack since Tubby's death, and has grown to become one of the leading blues venues in the Midlands/South West Region, bringing live music into the area that would otherwise not be seen in Cheltenham. The Club exclusivly promotes high energy R&B/Blues Rock bands.
OTIS MACK AND THE TUBBY BLUESTERS, LIVE AT THE TUBBY BLUES CLUB
Gigs happen on the first Friday of the month at The United Services Club in Cheltenham, and although they are only a small operation in terms of the number of shows promoted a year, they have a high reputation for the quality of the artistes.
They always feature at least 2 bands, one who will be fairly well known on the European Touring circuit and will be the main attraction, and a support act who may be less well known, but will be nevertheless of a very high standard. These support slots have provided good starters for quite a few bands who have since achieved greater recognition - Joanne Shaw Taylor and Jay Tamkin to mention just two examples.
The TUBBY BLUES CLUB takes place on the FIRST FRIDAY OF THE MONTH at "THE UNITED SERVICES CLUB", 7 NORTH PLACE,CHELTENHAM, GL50 4DW. ALL profits from their events are donated to Gloucestershire Hospitals and/or Acorns Children's Hospices.
Tickets for all Tubby Blues Club gigs are a tenner - call 01242 691998 or 07796 034206 for table and seating reservations, or send e-mail to firstname.lastname@example.org.
