Dogan Mehmet is a second generation Turkish Cypriot, with both sides of his family from the island. His heritage forms a big part of his musical identity, alongside his love for English traditional music and the rich cultural heritage of Brighton and the Sussex coast. Dogan plays violin, guitar, melodeon, tenor guitar as well as many Turkish instruments in a wide cross-section of styles from jazz and funk to soul and indie rock. With his band Dogan Mehmet & The Deerhunters he fuses Anglo-Turkish, Gypsy-Punk styles in a mix of traditions and strong acoustic grooves. After a very successful first UK tour, Dogan has recently finished working with producer/musician Tom Wright on his debut album with his backing band The Deerhunters. His unique sound is augmented by drums and percussion (Tom Wright), piano accordion (Colin Nicholson) and acoustic/electric/slide Guitar (Matt Price). A captivating and energetic mixture of Southern English and Turkish folk songs, self-penned material and driven tunes from the English Morris and Turkish and Greek Cypriot traditions give the Deerhunters a real, diverse sound that screams "World Fusion'. Dogan recently created a huge buzz & received incredible feedback from his showcase concert at the 2009 AFO conference, and is looking forward to a very busy summer. “Dogan Mehmet is a British folk original...a talent to watch” SONGLINES"One couldn't engineer a better response to the theft of the people's music than Dogan Mehmet... whose debut shines" Stewart Lee, Sunday Times
