Zanzibar are a four piece rock/pop band from the West Midlands. They are: Colin Burchill (vocals and acoustic guitar); Richard Smith (bass and backing vocals); Alex Vann (guitars and backing vocals) and Nick Chadd (drums and backing vocals). Colin, Rich and Alex were in the same band - 'Showground' in 1990 whilst Nick was playing the same circuit at the same time in bands Epsilon and Gridlock.
In 2007 Colin, Alex, Richard and Nick were all at a loose end. Each had kept in social contact with one or another and it seemed that the stars were now correctly aligned to create a group that would allow each of them to indulge their talents to the maximum degree. Several bar room conferences resulted in an agreement to pool their resources together and try this rock band game one more time.
A summer Friday evening in July 2007 saw them decamp to Musoplex studios in Oldbury, West Midlands (operated by the redoubtable figures of Andy Ward and Simon Reeves) to test the water and see if they had a common musical ground to stand on. They did and after a song writing splurge (plus numerous rehearsals and recording sessions between Summer '07 and Spring 2010) they released their debut album, the extravagantly-named 'Zanzibar'. Early reaction to the band has been enthusiastic and the next chapter of their collective story involves setting the stages of the Midlands alight with what Colin classes as "honest pop".
For a twenty year warm-up period, there are those that claim this band now have no excuse. They must deliver...and how. They sincerely hope you'll lend them an ear and a show of hands.
The apprentices of 1990 may at last become the achievers of 2010.
