Known for his cult classics Sugar Man and I Wonder, Rodriguez first appeared on the Detroit music scene in 1967, though never got his break-through in the US. Gathering fans in both South Africa and Australia he played a handful of intimate gigs and then disappeared from the music scene and focused on raising his family.

In 2006 a Swedish journalist learnt of Rodriguez’s story and decided to turn it into a film entitled Searching for Sugar Man, which eventually opened the 2012 Sundance Festival. After receiving critical acclaim and two awards from the festival it went on to win the BAFTA for Best Documentary, with Rodriguez finally receiving the recognition he strived for back in the 70s.
